How to Define Your Brand Voice (With Examples)
Your brand voice is half your brand, and it costs nothing but thought. Here's how to actually define it.
Two brands can sell the same thing and feel completely different — the difference is voice. It's how you sound, and it's half your brand. Yet almost everyone skips defining it. Here's how to do it properly.
Start with adjectives
Pick three or four words for how the brand should sound. Not what you do — how you speak. "Calm, exacting, warm." "Bold, playful, direct." These become your compass for every caption, email and page.
Write the do / never rules
Turn the adjectives into rules with examples:
- Do: state things plainly. "We make it hold."
- Never: hype. "We strive to deliver unparalleled excellence."
- Do: short sentences. Never: jargon to sound smart.
Concrete rules with examples beat abstract adjectives every time.
Show on-brand vs off-brand
The fastest way to lock a voice is a side-by-side:
- On-brand: "Built to hold."
- Off-brand: "🚀 We're SO excited to announce our game-changing solution!!!"
Anyone on your team can now feel the difference instantly.
Read it aloud
The simplest test: read your copy out loud. If it sounds like a human talking, ship it. If it sounds like a press release, rewrite it. Brands lose their voice the moment the writing starts trying to impress.
Keep it consistent everywhere
The voice has to hold across your website, captions, replies, bio and ads. One voice, everywhere, is what makes a brand feel like one confident company instead of five different interns.
Voice is part of every identity we build. See how we define it on our brand identity design in Dehradun page, or start a conversation.
