What Camera Should You Rent for a Product Shoot?

Renting for a product shoot? The camera matters less than you think — and the lens and lighting matter more. Here's how to choose.

Renting gear for a product shoot? The good news: you don't need the most expensive camera. You need the right combination. Here's how to choose without overspending.

The camera matters less than you think

For product photography, almost any modern full-frame mirrorless body will give you gorgeous results. A Sony a7 IV or a7R V is more than enough — the extra resolution of the a7R V helps if you crop hard or print large. You rarely need a cinema camera like an FX3 or FX6 for stills; those shine for video.

The lens is where the money should go

This is the real decision. For products:

  • A macro lens (like a 90mm macro) for jewellery, cosmetics, small detail — it's the single most useful product lens.
  • A 24-70mm f/2.8 as an all-rounder for most products and setups.
  • An 85mm for clean, flattering single-product hero shots.

If you rent one thing well, make it the lens.

Lighting beats everything

Great product photos are 70% lighting. A controllable LED (Godox, Nanlite) plus a softbox or a reflector and diffusion will transform flat product shots into premium ones. Budget for light before you upgrade the camera.

A simple rental kit for a product shoot

  • Body: Sony a7 IV (or a7R V for detail)
  • Lens: 90mm macro and a 24-70mm f/2.8
  • Light: one bi-colour LED + softbox
  • Support: a sturdy tripod
  • Extras: reflector, diffusion, a clean backdrop

What to skip

You don't need a cinema camera, a gimbal, or three lights for a table-top product shoot. Rent for the job, not the wishlist.
